Albariño belongs to Atlantic Galicia, which makes this inland Catalan version genuinely unusual. Manuel Raventós bought 3,200 hectares of semi-desert around a ruined castle near Lleida in 1914 and planted what remains Europe's largest single-family vineyard, now certified organic. The climate here is continental rather than oceanic: hot, dry, with sharp day-to-night swings and irrigation drawn from Pyrenean snowmelt, which is what keeps acidity intact. Straw-yellow with green glints. White flowers, nectarine, mango and grapefruit over a mineral thread. Fresh and broader-textured than Rías Baixas, dry and gastronomic.
Pairing: shellfish, grilled white fish, paella, chicken, fresh cheeses.
