The Barossa Valley, located about 60km from Adelaide, is a major producer of Aussie wines - notably Shiraz. The flavours of the wines produced here are big and bold; lots of ripe dark fruit, currant, mocha, and sometimes meaty. The heavy dose of sunshine and hot arid weather can create wines with alcohol levels north of 15%, but some of these wines have shown to improve with age. At higher elevations, like in the Eden Valley and Mount Lofty Ranges, you can find some top-level Rieslings and elegant Shiraz with higher acidity. The Clare Valley is another excellent location for sourcing Rieslings and delicate Cab/Merlot blends.
