Puglia, the "heel" of the Italian "boot", takes full advantage of its hot, Mediterranean sun to produce an immense amount of wine. The most interesting wines are made from native grape varieties rarely grown outside of Puglia. The most prominent among these are Negroamaro and Primitivo (Zinfandel's old world relative), which tend to produce deeply coloured and richly flavoured reds.
