Coca i Fito

COCO BANNER

Coca i Fitó is the shared work of two brothers, Toni and Miquel Coca i Fitó, sons of an Alt Penedès farming family who grew up among vines and eventually struck out on their own. The project began in 2006 in DO Montsant, where they made a single wine, Coca i Fitó Negre, from one of the region's oldest vineyards, releasing just 5,000 bottles. Its success opened the door to everything that followed.

The partnership works because the brothers are opposites in the best way. Toni is the oenologist and chief winemaker, one of Catalonia's most decorated, named the region's best winemaker in 2018; Miquel, trained as a chef and in foreign trade, shapes the winery's design and commercial voice, and draws the labels himself. Toni's own research has focused on how vine and soil speak to one another, and on how different varieties age.The cellar sits in El Masroig, in the southern reaches of Montsant, with roughly 30 hectares spread across 20 parcels and five distinct soils: red and white clay, limestone, sand, granite and slate.

Farming is organic, with practices built around ecological balance and careful water use. Garnatxa and Carinyena are the backbone here, joined by Macabeu, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Curiosity has since carried the brothers well beyond Montsant, into Terra Alta, Empordà, Priorat and Ribeira Sacra - along with a vermouth, an olive oil, and a portfolio that now runs past twenty small-lot bottlings. Every one of them reads as a photograph of the place it came from.
