95+ Point Wines

95-plus-ratings1.jpg

Wines awarded 95 or more points are much rarer than those scoring between 90-94. What can you expect from a high-scoring wine? Most critics agree that 95+ points indicates benchmark examples of the type or vintages, and wines that are judged to become classics. Keep in mind that critics have their own preferences for different styles or regions of wine. Some may prefer stronger, bolder tasting wines; others, weaker, more subtle. Some prefer Bordeaux or California, for example, and tend to rate those wines slightly higher. Like getting to know your friends, becoming familiar with major critics and their preferences also takes time. To make a broad statement however, most top critics generally agree and all of them recognize quality.

We do our best to post the most reputable and recent critic scores available so our clients can feel confident in their fine wine purchases.

Masseto 2017 Tenuta Dell' Ornellaia Red 3.0L

$4,354.99

The 2017 Masseto is fabulous. A wine of tremendous inner perfume and sensuality, the 2017 dazzles from start to finish. Although not the most potent or structured Masseto, the 2017 impresses with its breathtaking finesse. The flavors are vibrant and...

Krug 2003 Brut 1.5L

$1,152.08

Light yellow. Powerful, complex bouquet evokes fresh peach, pear, floral honey, green almond and smoky minerals. Deep, palate-staining citrus and orchard fruit flavors show outstanding vivacity for a hot vintage, picking up ginger and talc notes with air...

Shafer 2016 Hillside Select 1.5L

$1,095.56

Very deep, vibrant purple-black colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select strides confidently out of the glass with expressive notions of blueberry preserves, Black Forest cake, cassis and cedar chest with touches of pencil lead, licorice,...

Vega Sicilia Reserva Especial R20 750ml

$999.99

To be released in 2020, the NV Único Reserva Especial 2020 Release is a non-vintage blend of 59 barrels from 2008, 2009 and 2010, mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has been getting closer to the style of the Único,...

Antinori 2004 Solaia IGT 750ml

$912.95

I consider the 2004 Solaia the first of the truly epic modern Solaia. This is the first vintage in which the component wines were aged separately and blended towards the end of aging. That, along with more care in managing temperature in fermentation and...

Shafer 2009 Hillside Select 750ml

$826.00

Made entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Hillside Select has a deep garnet color. Wow—it explodes from the glass with this atomic nose of crème de cassis, Black Forest cake, baked plums and boysenberries plus hints of licorice, mocha,...

Shafer 2011 Hillside Select 750ml

$826.00

Possibly the Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage is Shafer’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select. Last year I thought it was a strong effort, but it’s even better now that it’s been bottled. With an opaque black/purple color and notes...

Vega Sicilia 2010 Unico 750ml

$799.99

I was surprised by the aromatics of the 2010 Único, cropped from a powerful and concentrated year that delivered this blend of 94% Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 14.5% alcohol and a highish pH of 3.87. It fermented...

Antinori 2007 Solaia IGT 750ml

$791.21

The 2007 Solaia saturates the palate with a heady array of super-ripe black cherries, plums, cassis, mocha and sweet French oak. There is an exotic quality to the Solaia I find totally irresistible. Despite its considerable ripeness and opulence, the...

Shafer 2013 Hillside Select 750ml

$695.56

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select will probably hit the magic three-digit score, but it is a more backward style of wine, although probably even more concentrated than the 2012, and that’s saying something. Fabulous potential of 30-50...

Antinori 2012 Solaia IGT 750ml

$634.69

The 2012 Solaia is the ultimate comfort wine: It serves as a beautiful monument to the potential of Italian wine. Let me give you some context. My lukewarm review of the 2011 vintage caused some heads to turn. Happily, the previous vintage has served as...

Dal Forno 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella 750ml

$565.13

The 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta is my favorite wine in the retrospective, along with the amazing 2011, 2009 and 1996 vintages. This wine was released at the beginning of this year, and because Dal Forno skipped over the 2014 vintage,...
