Italian wine is made to go with Italian food. And so it stands to reason that Italian wine varies just as widely across the country's regions as does its cuisine. Indeed, Italy is home to hundreds if not thousands of indigenous grape varieties, the majority known only to the locals where they are grown. But the big players, like Nebbiolo from Barolo and Barbaresco, and Sangiovese from Chianti to name the most famous, are known the world over.
