A Sicilian, Agostino Pontillo, first encountered the Alps as a soldier on the Asiago front in 1915. He settled in Trento, and in 1930 founded Distilleria Alpina on a single idea: marry Sicily's amaro-making tradition to the officinal herbs of the Dolomites. That original recipe — 22 herbs, roots and berries, among them gentian, juniper, clary sage, elderflower and pino mugo — remains secret, and the striking Futurist label was designed by Fortunato Depero. The Sembenotti brothers revived the house in 2020; Italy recognised it as a Marchio Storico in 2024. Balanced rather than punishing: herbal and balsamic, gently bittersweet, 18.5% abv.
Serve: chilled after dinner, over ice, or as an AlpenSpritz with prosecco and elderflower.
