Legent represents a historic collision of two whisky worlds. It is a collaboration between Fred Noe, the seventh-generation Master Distiller at Jim Beam, and Shinji Fukuyo, the fifth-ever Chief Blender at Suntory. The liquid starts as a classic Kentucky Straight Bourbon aged in virgin white oak. It is then finished in California red wine and sherry casks before being meticulously blended by Fukuyo. The result is a bourbon that retains its American backbone while gaining the complex, layered nuance typical of Japanese whisky.
Tasting Notes
-
Nose: The aroma is inviting and rich. Expect immediate hits of brown sugar and toasted almonds, followed by layers of dried fruits like figs and raisins. As it opens up, you will detect tart red berries and a subtle thread of spice.
-
Palate: This is where the finishing casks shine. It enters with the familiar warmth of oak and caramel but quickly evolves. You will find bright notes of black cherry, candied ginger, and citrus oil. The texture is silky, moving away from the aggressive char of standard bourbons into something far more jammy and fruit-forward.
-
Finish: The finish is medium to long and pleasantly drying. It leaves a lingering impression of dark chocolate, leather, and baking spices.
