Named for the Apennine massif that dominates the region — Italy's highest peak south of the Alps — whose altitude and mountain air give Abruzzo the diurnal swing that keeps Montepulciano fresh rather than merely soft. Farnese, based at Ortona, has built its reputation on delivering serious quality at everyday prices, and this is the range's workhorse. Ruby red with garnet highlights. Marasca cherry, plum and ripe red berries lead, with warm spice and a subtle vanilla lift. Full-bodied and well-balanced, with supple tannins, low acidity and a long, harmonious finish.
Pairing: pizza, grilled steak, sausage ragù, aged pecorino.
