La Rioja Alta 2011 Gran Reserva 904 750ml
I usually prefer the 904 to the 890, but there will be no Gran Reserva 890 until the 2010 vintage (from the last vintage I tasted, 2005). So, the only one of the extended-aging Haro-style reds I...

Bodegas Lopez de Heredia 2009 Vina Bosconia Reserva 750ml
The 2009 Viña Bosconia Reserva shows the ripeness of the very warm and dry year. It's structured and concentrated, quite different from the finesse of the Tondonia. Bosconia has always been...

Bodegas Lopez de Heredia 2009 Vina Tondonia Reserva 375ml
The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are...

Contino 2012 Gran Reserva 750ml
The oldest of the current releases, the 2012 Gran Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano, 12% Garnacha and 3% white Viura, a classical combination, with 13.65% alcohol, remarkable...

Checkmate 2017 Attack Chardonnay 750ml
The 2017 Attack Chardonnay was aged for 16 months in new French foudres (rather than barriques) and comes in at 13.9% alcohol. Nervy, fresh and elegant on opening, this somehow manages to lift the...

Trimbach 2018 Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg 750ml
In 2012, the Trimbach family acquired 1.6 hectares in this very well-reputed Grand Cru. They produced our first vintage in 2014 (released in 2017), in line with the pure and crystalline Rieslings...

Description
As with many wines this time, I had two vintages to taste of the Reserva from the Tondonia vineyard, 2009 and 2008, two very different, almost opposite vintages. The 2009 Viña Tondonia Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Mazuelo and Graciano, matured in used American oak barrels for six years. It has some toasted character, with ripe fruit, black rather than red, denoting a warm year but more restrained than the Bosconia Reserva from the same vintage. 2009 is a year of ripeness, concentration and tannin; the wines are powerful, but here you see the finesse of Tondonia in comparison to the more rustic Viña Bosconia.
