The lightest in this year’s Selbach caravan of Auslesen is their 2006 Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Auslese. Lemon, apple blossom, clover, and subtle suggestions of red berries and honey completely belie – in their delicacy and freshness – what one expects of the vintage. A suggestion of creaminess is allied to dynamic notes of juicy apple and red currant, brown spices, and faintly sizzling citrus zest pungency. Overall, the palate impression is more aggressive and less refined than the nose. This needs time to coordinate its elements and harness its high-strung energy, but that is a good omen in and of itself, and I have little doubt one can follow this with pleasure for 20 years.
