A blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. This wine highlights the suitability of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz to some of the driest regions in the Barossa. The fruit is forked into our 1880’s wooden Bagshaw de-stemmer before fermenting in open slate tanks. Our 1890’s Robinson Basket Press slowly squeezes the remaining juice from the grapes, before the individual components are left to mature in seasoned oak casks. When the final blend comes together, layers of soft, savoury, spicy flavours are emerging and will continue to develop with a handful more years in bottle. This year the first grapes were picked in mid-February. Dry-grown vineyards reflected the season with light crops and small berries, producing fine fruit. Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz have proven their ability to survive in tough conditions and show their tenacity with concentrated flavour and super intense, vibrant colour. The 2016 vintage Moppa Springs is earthy, soft and spicy. It’s a great reflection of this vintage and how perfectly suited the Barossa’s Mediterranean climate is for these pioneer varieties.

-- Winemaker’s Notes

---

Rockford is a small boutique wine producer based in South Australia's Barossa Valley. Founder and winemaker, Robert O'Callaghan belongs to a genre of visionary winemakers that include Max Schubert, Peter Lehmann, Jeffrey Grosset, Brian Croser and David Hohnen. His protégés include Chris Ringland and Dave Powell. Rockford wines have had a profound influence on winemaking philosophy and wine style in the Barossa. Providing the inspiration for a whole generation of winemakers 'the Rockford school' embraces the inherent qualities of old vine Shiraz: the physicality of winemaking where muscle and personal touch transform process into an art-form; the traditional tools of trade (basket press, open fermenter) and the complementary nuances of American and French oak maturation. Best known for their Basket Press Shiraz, Rockford also produces a handful of top-quality wines from old vine fruit sourced from selected growers across the Barossa Valley.
