Description
The 2016 Saint George (the winery uses the English translation of Agiorgitiko on the label in the larger print) was aged for 12 months in used French oak. It comes in with four grams of sugar, right about at the limit for typical "fully dry," and 13.5% alcohol. Unlike the Zoe red, this adds a little structure and depth so that it feels more like real wine instead of a picnic quaffer. Still, this is heavily perfumed and very fruity, with a slightly sweet edge in its youth (relatively speaking—it still counts as a dry table wine). Consider this just the Zoe made in a slightly more serious fashion. It's still sort of a picnic wine, and it really doesn't have the stuffing or structure to age much (or to hold up to strong foods). That said, it's pretty delicious and well worth a try. It's an exuberant summer red, and this seems to be a good year for it. You might do well cooling it down an extra couple of degrees. Drink it very young. Drink: 2019-2023
