Arthur Ostertag has fourteen hectares of vines around the village of Epfig, he farms sustainably and biodynamically, certified since 1998. His Jardin range is sourced from 88 differing plots from 5 villages. For this his Sylvaner Vieilles Vignes comes from 10 plots of vines, with an average age of 55 years, from the villages of Epfig and nearby Nothalten, on 5 differing soil types: sandstone, clay and sandstone, marl and clay, granite and alluvial, all giving diverse flavours. The Jardin range are fermented with their natural yeasts in stainless steel and tend to be left for a year on their lees before bottling. The old vines and long lees aging give this wine its spectacular long and rich palate elevating a sometimes workhorse grape variety into a delicious mouthful.
