This producer has specialized in fresh and vibrant Vinho Verde wines for over 100 years. This wine is very fresh and light, with a bit of a spritz, making it perfect for seafood dishes and salads. Try pairing with prawn salad, tuna tataki, and light Mexican food.
The 2015 Portal Da Calcada Reserva (Quinta Da Calcada) is an unoaked, equal blend of Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto, Azal and Trajadura. It is relatively dry (six grams per liter of residual sugar) and comes in at 11.5% alcohol. This has been seen before, but since it is a good example of how even inexpensive wines blossom with a little more time in the bottle after bottling, it is worth another look. Seen at the winery, this is fully open and far more expressive now, seeming drier yet more intensely flavorful and also more persistent. It has pretty much gone where I thought it might. It is an overachiever and a super value that is showing great now. This, said General Manager André Estácio Pinto, is the essence of the region, while the "Quinta" wines are more serious table wines from the best blocks. This doesn't lack for much this year, though, and its style is enlivening.
