The Isolano is 100% Cataratto and takes its name from Solano family (part of the cooperative) who were responsible for planting Cataratto Extra Lucido (alleged pure/selection of the variety) three generations ago in the Parrinino Valley. Approximately 6000 bottles are produced annually and I can guarantee it is one of a kind! It is partially macerated on its skins giving it a dark gold/yellow colour and dominated by nutty aromas, minerality, fresh citrus and a slightly oily texture. This wine is seriously gulp-able and will pair with plenty of dishes including fish and seafood in general.
Cataratto is not generally thought to produce high quality wines, less for a few areas and key producers. Valdibella is considered one of those exceptions. Vines for the cooperative are farmed organically between the areas of Camporeale and Monreale in Northwest Sicily. Members of the co-op have written their own biodiversity and winemaking charter which includes a low or no sulphite policy. It is their flagship variety and they have some 50 year-old bush vines planted at higher elevations. This wine takes its name from the Solano family, responsible for planting a high quality clone (alleged pure/selection) three generations ago in the Parrinino Valley. Approximately 6000 bottles are produced annually.
