BACKGROUND
Originally inspired by Tom Stolpman’s love of Italy and Italian wines, Estate Sangiovese has always been focused on our original Sangiovese planting in Block 3, the fabled Rodino clone! After over a decade of experimenting with aging periods as short as 9 months and as long as 36, we settled on 30 months in neutral. Two and a half years in barrel gives Sangiovese’s overt natural tannin – which is magnified by our high daily peak heat, 40 degree diurnal swings, and dry-farmed small berries – enough time to integrate into a rich, supple, pleasingly delicious profile. The fruit stays fresh with bountiful red cherry and violets.

VINTAGE
2012 was perhaps the perfect vintage for Sangiovese as the wines are intense yet mellow. Upon release the Sangiovese is approachable and easy-drinking yet has the depth to reward those who cellar it.

AT THE WINERY
Next to our flagship Syrahs, the Sangiovese shows ripe and fruit forward. With no stems or new oak included, the wine relies on only acid and tannin for balance. In 2012, Sashi reverted to the use of smaller 228L barrels rather than 500L Puncheons. The smaller barrels allow for a bit more oxidation and more rapid polymerization. In short, use of the smaller vessels should make the 2012 Estate Sangiovese deliciously approachable.

SENSORY
The 2012 Sangiovese is especially aromatic and forward, unlike some of the past vintages of Sangiovese that were dominated by chewiness and leather upon release. Red fruit, highlighting cranberries and fresh strawberry, extends through the finish. The full-bodied 2012 will certainly maintain Estate Sangiovese’s dominance as the #1 seller in the Tasting Room!
