Rieslingfreak No.3 is harvested from John Hughes' Clare Valley family vineyard, and its heavy red clay soils. The expansiveness from the clay well offsets this racy, bone-dry wine, tempering the acidity with a modicum of flesh on the palate. Orange blossom, tangerine, Asian pear, white grapefruit, quince and apricot fuzz fill the slender, lengthy frame, lingering on the finish.

The Clare Valley vineyard for this one has red-clay soils believed to allow for a more fruit-forward style. There was significant pink grapefruit and lime character in the aromatics, but I found apples and pears to tumble forward on the palate, with just a touch of orange marmalade on the finish.
