From 70-year-old Marsanne grown on granitic soils and fermented and aged in used barriques and demi-muids, the Fayolles' 2017 Crozes Hermitage Le Pontaix Blanc is a terrific example of the appellation. Buttered toast accents rich pineapple fruit in this full-bodied, plush wine. It's concentrated and intense, with a long finish that easily carries the faint bitterness often associated with Marsanne. While I suggest consuming it young for its opulent fruit, I suspect it may surprise consumers who stash a bottle in their cellars only to find it a decade later.
