This is a formal, sit down tasting with Doug Barzelay to promote his new book “Burgundy Vintages – A History From 1845”. Guests will be introduced to the book by Doug as he leads a tasting of six different wines from Burgundy and finishing off with one of the Estate Pinot Noirs from Foxtrot Vineyards.
Doug Barzelay, a noted connoisseur and collector, is the co-author, with Allen Meadows, of Burgundy Vintages-A History From 1845.In writing Vintages, Doug has drawn on nearly a half-century of tasting older Burgundies. His passion for and knowledge of the great (and less great) Burgundy vintages is virtually unparalleled, and he has been instrumental in organizing numerous comprehensive tastings, including retrospectives of Romanée-Conti back to 1870, La Romanée to 1865, and Clos de Tart to 1887. His knowledge of Burgundian history was also critical in helping to unmask on of the largest wine frauds ever, perpetrated by the notorious wine counterfeiter, Rudy Kurniawan, an experience he wrote about in The Rise and Fall of a Wine Counterfeiter, an essay available at www.oldvinenotes.com.
While ancient Burgundies are his first love, Doug also travels to Burgundy frequently to taste new vintages in barrel, and his vintage and wine evaluations are available at oldvinenotes.com. He serves as co-Grand Cellérier for the Commanderie d’Amérique of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.
In 2018, Doug followed his passion for pinot into new territory, as he and business partner Nathan Todd, along with an investor group, acquired Foxtrot Winery in the Okanagan Valley, one of the few places in the world where original ungrafted pinot noir vines are still thriving. Both Doug and Nathan are strong believers in the potential for creating high-quality terroir-based pinots on the Naramata Bench.
