Domaine Francois Carillon 2014 Puligny-Montrachet "Les Combettes" 1er Cru 750ml
(production was cut 30% by hail; from vines planted in 1992): Pale, green-tinged yellow. White peach and lime aromas are complicated by licorice and smoke. Fat, rich and sweet, with the musky lime quality carrying through on the palate. Could use a bit more shape but this chewy wine has good material and potential.
Score: (90-92) points
Carillon describes the 2014s as round wines with good fruit. "The pHs are a bit too high for a great year, but it's really a lovely vintage, except for the hail," he told me at the beginning of June, adding that the year reminded him of 2005. Grape sugars were in the high 12.7% to 13.4% range and Carillon did not chaptalize his wines. Carillon now exploits 14 hectares of vines, of which he owns 7.
