Marquis Tasting Note:
This winery is the partnership of Pedro Parra (one of Chile’s most famous enologists) with Francois Massoc, Paco Leyton, and Albert Cussen. Although the project is based in Pedro's home region of Bio Bio, 500km south of Santiago, the focus is not limited to making wines from Bio Bio: rather the idea is to discover (or rediscover) and celebrate great unknown terroirs throughout Chile. Clos des Fous is an immensely exciting project, focused on the revitalization of very old dry farmed vineyards and the planting of new vineyards in the most dramatic and challenging conditions imaginable. This nose and palate of this wine is the combined pleasure of red fruits and dark cherry together. It comes complete with a touch of spice - black pepper, and green tea. The texture is silky and broad with soft tannins and a subtle minerality on the finish. Its excellent acidity increases vivacity with an elegant finish and feminine character. This is a versatile food wine and will pair with a range of weights and flavours with dishes such as pastas, stews to roast meats (pork, game and maybe even duck).
Saturated ruby. Smoke-accented aromas of dark berry compote, pipe tobacco and succulent herbs, with subtle mineral and floral qualities adding lift. Shows very good depth, energy and precision on the palate, offering silky cherry, blackberry and candied rose flavors that tighten up with air. Clings with very good tenacity on the smoky finish, which features supple tannins and building spiciness. Score: 90 points -- Vinous, May 2015
