Closed with a white wax capsule, the 2018 Il Guercio is named after a Tuscan moniker for a "one-eyed rascal," which is the nickname for the estate's winemaking mentor, Sean O'Callaghan. Il Guercio is a pure expression of Sangiovese (from a high-altitude vineyard called Mello located at 700 meters above sea level) that opens to a mid-weight and bright ruby appearance. The wine is tangy and bright, with a fun, almost raw character that vaguely recalls carbonic maceration or cherry soda. Twenty percent whole-cluster fruit is used. The wine is lifted and shows a whole lot of character and authenticity. This is an excellent discovery from Radda in Chanti.
