Bright, dark golden-yellow color. Very intense aromas of ripe yellow apple, pear, chamomile and white flowers. Rich, dense and juicy, with orchard fruit and botanical herb flavors complicated by a savory element. Finishes long and almost creamy (despite 6.4 grams per liter of total acidity, expressed as tartaric), with hints of lime and custard cream. Undoubtedly, this rather richly styled Vorberg will remind many drinkers of a wine made from Chardonnay. This vintage is especially successful in the context of the very difficult growing season, which was marred by low temperatures and copious rainfall through most of the summer (a sunny September helped save the harvest).

This wine is always high on my list of favorite picks from Alto Adige. Despite the challenging vintage, the 2014 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg walks a delicate line between power and elegance. The bouquet offers subtle tones of white peach with Golden Delicious apple and crushed mineral. Pineapple and preserved lemon are also small but tangy parts of the overall ensemble. There is a very mild level of toastiness with roasted almond and honey. The wine offers tight and rich texture overall.

"The south-facing slopes of Monzoccolo in the Terlano DOC area are the location of steep and sunny vineyards at altitudes between 450 and 950 meters above sea-level, where a very exciting Pinot Bianco flourishes. This rich and highly complex wine is impressive for its minerality and considerable capacity for development and thus underscores the full potential of this grape variety."
