Joseph Phelps 2013/2014 Insignia

If you don't flinch at spending $400 for a bottle of wine that's opulent and expressive, Insignia is well worth a try. This beautiful red blend derives from carefully monitored estate vineyards in California's verdant Napa Valley. Focused and fresh with hints of cocoa, mocha, and vanilla, Joseph Phelps Insignia offers dark fruit concentrate balanced with a waft of cardamom and a supple tannin structure.

This Phelps wine is sourced with 87% cab sav, 9% Petit Verdot, 2% cab franc and 2% Malbec grapes, all from the Napa Valley. Vineyard districts represented in this beautiful blend include Stags Leap, Oak Knoll, Barboza, Yountville, and St. Helena. As with many Phelps wines, 2013/2014 Insignia has aged a minimum of 24 months in French oak barrels made by coppersmiths at Sylvain, Marcel Cadet, Dargaud Jaegle and Taransaud.

2014: A very good year for wine

The 2014 Napa Valley growing season started with extra mild winter temps and near-drought conditions that persisted until February. In March, welcomed springtime showers delivered enough moisture to fill vineyard reservoirs. Bud break happened around four weeks sooner than bud break 2013. Frost was not an issue.

Consistent summer temperatures persisted throughout the 2014 growing months, ripening Napa grapes in time for a relatively early harvest. This means that the tannins, flavors, and acidity were more mature than they were at the same time of year for two prior growing seasons. 2014 fruit offers phenomenal flavor and beautiful characteristics that make Napa wine beloved around the world. Blocks were consistent, and flavor intensity at harvest was remarkable in 2014.

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate gives this 2014 wine a very high 97+ rating. Reviewers at The Wine Advocate remarked on well-structured flavors they found reminiscent of sandalwood, dried lavender, mocha and cigar boxes. If you desire a lively wine with a long earthy finish, Joseph Phelps 2013/2014 Insignia is one to consider. Best of all, you can buy this wine at the best online wine store today.
