2008 is a sadly over-looked vintage in the Southern Rhône. While it may not have produced 'blockbuster' wines like its neighbouring vintages, it did produce wines that are far more classic to the region; more restrained, intellectual and best of all, drinkable. With the intensity toned down, lower alcohols and more refined flavours make these 2008 a definite 'insiders' vintage. This week's offering are two personal favourites, not just from CdP but from this vintage as a whole. From Vignobles Brunier, we have the 2008 Domaine la Roquète and from our good friends at Domaine la Barroche, their exquisite 2008 'Signature'. Both these wines regular prices are very reasonable for this appellation, and with the added savings passed on in this offer, these should be no-brainers for Rhône lovers.

"Dark purple. Highly fragrant bouquet of dark berries, woodsmoke, dried violet and fruitcake. Very rich for the vintage, offering weighty blackcurrant and mulberry flavors and a sexy floral quality. This is more structured and dense than the Terroir, and shows stronger finishing thrust and tannic grip. The 10% syrah in the blend-and more might be added prior to the bottling-will ensure that this ages well, Barrot believes.
89-91 points"

"Dark red. Ripe dark berries and cherry on the nose, with deeper notes of plum and licorice coming up with aeration. Rich but surprisingly energetic on the palate, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and good mineral snap. A spicy note adds vivacity to the focused, sappy finish. Showing an elegant personality already. 88-90 points"
