Greece

With the earliest evidence of Greek wine dating back 6,500 years, Greece is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. Wine became such a large part of the ancient Greek culture that the civilization even worshiped Dionysus, the God of Wine. Although presently the country produces many varieties of wine, retsina is the national beverage of Greece.

About Greek Wines

Where does one start with the apparent birthplace of wine, Greece? Historically they have lagged behind the rest of the world in terms of exports, promotion, and embracing their indigenous varieties--after all who wants a chardonnay from Greece when you can get one from other parts of the world?

Most of the Greek wine promotion is localized in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal. Fortunately this has started to change and many growers are embracing their unique position within the wine world, varietals like Xinomavro, Agiorhgitiko, Monenvasia,, Moschofilero, Mavrotragano to name a few.

The Greek whites pair especially well with our West Coast cuisine, fresh, lively and clean are the operative words. The future of Greek wines is quite exciting.
