Canada

Canada is a small player on the international wine scene, but Canadian wines are a big factor in the overall sales of any wine store in Canada. The major grape growing regions are the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia and the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario. Both regions are big tourist magnets and draw visitors from around the world to sample the wines, in particular icewine.

About Canadian Wines

At Marquis Wine Cellars we have a small handpicked selection of some of the best Meritage style wines from producers like Painted Rock, Laughing Stock and La Frenz as well as some of the best aromatic whites such as Tantalus Riesling, Joie Noble Blend and Cedar Creek Ehrenfelser. We also keep a small selection of the best Icewine we can find at reasonable prices and some interesting fruit wines. The fruit wines are a legacy from BC’s past when the Okanagan Valley was known more for its orchards than for grape growing. Some of the best single varietal wines come from a producer called Blue Mountain Winery. We regularly have stock of the Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay from this long time BC cult winery.

Due to a punitive mark up structure by the BC Liquor Control Board we currently do not stock wines from other provinces as they do not represent good value for money. When in Ontario the wines from Thirty Bench and Malivoire wineries are among a select few worth seeking out. In our opinion the Riesling based icewine from Ontario and B.C. are the ones to buy as they retain acid better than other grape varieties, this leads to a fresher less cloying style.
